A Descriptive Case Analysis of Instructional Teaching Practices in Finnish Preschool Classrooms
2013
This study examined the diversity of teaching practices to illuminate the qualitative variety of instructional teaching practices among preschool teachers. Further, teachers' self-rated educational goals were explored to complement the multifaceted nature of preschool teachers' instructional teaching practices. The study was carried out as a case study. The cases were used to describe the qualitative variety of Finnish preschool teachers' instructional practices in authentic classroom situations among groups of 6-year-old children. The authors' previous study revealed four distinct latent profiles of teaching practices in preschool classrooms based on 49 observed preschool teachers, using t…
Worst Case Analysis of Non-local Games
2013
Non-local games are studied in quantum information because they provide a simple way for proving the difference between the classical world and the quantum world. A non-local game is a cooperative game played by 2 or more players against a referee. The players cannot communicate but may share common random bits or a common quantum state. A referee sends an input x i to the i th player who then responds by sending an answer a i to the referee. The players win if the answers a i satisfy a condition that may depend on the inputs x i .
The Rally Course : Learners as co-designers of out-of-classroom language learning tasks
2019
This chapter introduces a “Rally Course” as a novel CA-inspired approach to teaching a second language. This approach builds on an understanding of language learning as a social process that is closely intertwined with L2 speakers’ evolving membership in the surrounding community. It addresses the need to develop experiential pedagogies that widen learners’ opportunities for interaction and support the socialisation process. Building on recent pedagogical initiatives supporting language learning in the wild, we illustrate the overall structure of the Rally Course, describe the main materials that were designed to support the learning objectives and present a case analysis of a student carry…
Follow-Up Data Improve the Estimation of the Prevalence of Heavy Alcohol Consumption.
2018
Aims. We aim to adjust for potential non-participation bias in the prevalence of heavy alcohol consumption. Methods. Population survey data from Finnish health examination surveys conducted in 1987–2007 were linked to the administrative registers for mortality and morbidity follow-up until end of 2014. Utilising these data, available for both participants and non-participants, we model the association between heavy alcohol consumption and alcohol-related disease diagnoses. Results. Our results show that the estimated prevalence of heavy alcohol consumption is on average of 1.5 times higher for men and 1.8 times higher for women than what was obtained from participants only (complete case an…
The average state complexity of rational operations on finite languages is linear
2010
Considering the uniform distribution on sets of m non-empty words whose sum of lengths is n, we establish that the average state complexities of the rational operations are asymptotically linear.
Traditional festivities, political domination and social reproduction: Case analysis of Valencia’s Fallas
2020
The traditional festivities have been usually analysed in social sciences as a mode of generating sociability and social cohesion, not only in traditional societies but also in modern ones. However...
ALGORITHMS FOR JUMBLED PATTERN MATCHING IN STRINGS
2011
The Parikh vector p(s) of a string s is defined as the vector of multiplicities of the characters. Parikh vector q occurs in s if s has a substring t with p(t)=q. We present two novel algorithms for searching for a query q in a text s. One solves the decision problem over a binary text in constant time, using a linear size index of the text. The second algorithm, for a general finite alphabet, finds all occurrences of a given Parikh vector q and has sub-linear expected time complexity; we present two variants, which both use a linear size index of the text.
Digital revolution in current architecture: towards a new architectural expressivity
2013
The triumphal entry of computing in architectural design has produced a real revolution in architectural scenario, but, until now it is unclear how we can identify digital influences in each project and how they have contributed to the birth of new expressive trends. We have developed a framework for identifying and classifying architectural design elements that should be attributed to the methods and techniques of design computing. This framework is then applied to sixty prominent recent buildings which are acknowledged products of digital means. The goals of this are, firstly, to verify the applicability of the descriptive framework and, secondly, to identify combinations of elements that…

Como gerentes de nível médio contribuem para o processo de formação de estratégia: conexão entre processos estratégicos e práticas estratégicas
2010
The role of middle management is essential when managing integrative and emergent strategy formation processes. We stand out the importance of its role connecting micro and macro organizational level offering a very important contribution when examining the strategy-as-practice perspective and integrative strategy formation process. The main goal of this research is to analyse the relationship between the integrative strategy formation process and the roles of middle management under the strategy-as-practice perspective. To check it out we adopted a qualitative methodology droving a case analysis in a Spanish University. Data was collected by means of personal interviews with members of dif…
